Visited the newly-renovated Varsity Theater last night for the first time since the reinvention to see “65”. I liked it, which appears to put me in the “slim minority” category – the Internet seems to universally revile it.
I guess I got what the filmmakers were going for – it was a sparse father-daughter survival drama taking place on prehistoric Earth. Perhaps the other viewers of the movie were expecting more than that? I don’t think it was designed to win an Academy Award, but I found it very watchable.
I suppose I can see some of the criticisms which might have made it difficult to relate to the characters – Adam Driver’s character and the young girl character don’t speak the same language. Maybe my expectations were met and I didn’t question it.
The Varsity, by the way, is gorgeous now. Worth a visit. The only problem for them is that nobody seems to watch movies in theaters any more. It’s going to be an uphill battle for them.
